These two had been at school together and never roamed far beyond the town. They were content and deeply appreciated the familiarity and depth of one another\u2019s friendship. It was unusual,\u00a0 therefore, to watch them fizzing like a herd of ants imitating a headless chicken. I\u2019m no eavesdropper but I couldn\u2019t help overhearing\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u2018You mean you nicked it?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u2018I did, yeah. You have a problem with that?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Well, as a matter of fact, yes, I do have several problems with that. And the first is that you forgot to tell me about it.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018 Well, sorry about that, mate, but it\u2019s something that\u2019s been bothering me for a while. 30 years at least.\u00a0 It\u2019s an old score I had to settle. You should be glad I still care about honour and dignity.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Go on then. How did you do it?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

\u2018I just kind of sidled up and unscrewed it. I was in the school anyway, doing a bit of a paint job. There it was, the very plaque that should have had our team\u2019s names on it, but instead it had those hard-nosed buggers from Leyland comp proclaimed winners. What a travesty. You know it ruined the rest of our time at that school having to look at it every day.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Well, yeah, you\u2019re not wrong. It was a great miscarriage of justice. But wasn\u2019t there a big gap where you unscrewed the plate? Won\u2019t anyone notice to hole in the roll of honour?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018That\u2019s the whole point. I want <\/em>people to notice. I want a rematch, and an acknowledgement that we won fair and square and that the ref was biased.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Better keep schtum and see what happens. What have you done with the plate then?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Ah, you know what they say, \u201cif I told you that, I\u2019d have to kill you\u2019\u2019. \u2018<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018 So you\u2019ve started to keep secrets from your best mate now? You\u2019re really starting to go low these days\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Hardly a secret. I\u2019ve hidden it in plain sight. That\u2019s your clue. \u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that point the pub door burst open and three very out of condition former rugby players puffed and blustered their way through the thin crowd and addressed the friends\u2019 table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018We happen to believe that one of you has hacked the private WhatsApp group of ex- Leylanders. \u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A phone was proffered showing a photo of the now-contentious plaque with the challenging message \u2018you all know this result was a mis-call. We demand the opportunity to set the record straight\u2019.  It was provocative stuff. And the message seemed to have touched a very raw nerve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rising as one, our friends squared up to the Leylanders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u2018Have you got a time in mind for the rematch?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u2018\u2019Weekends are best for me if you don\u2019t mind.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Leylanders hurled themselves away and offered further provocation to the pub door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
