When the images of the Netflix parties she wouldn\u2019t be hosting started flashing through her mind, she turned to red wine and The Beatles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Half a bottle down, and midway through the second chorus of Yesterday,<\/em> she passed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Waking with a hangover was less painful than waking without one when the sting of rejection was still raw. At least she could focus on the ache in her head instead of the one in her soul. The sound of the doorbell pierced both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Alex and Meg barged in, paper bags rustling, the smell of baked goods and coffee wafting from them. Despite herself, Jade\u2019s mouth watered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Thought you might need cheering up after your drunken messages last night.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n There was nothing like bonding over shared despair with fellow writers, and soon Jade\u2019s creativity was reignited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Know what film I wish I\u2019d written?\u2019 she said, drunk on caffeine, sugar and friendship. \u2018Yesterday.<\/em>\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Never seen it,\u2019 said Meg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Me neither,\u2019 said Alex. \u2018What\u2019s it about?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Picture this: The Beatles have been erased from history. Only you remember them. So, you\u2019re faced with the ultimate dilemma. Do you \u2018write\u2019 all their songs and cash in?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Yes!\u2019 said Alex. \u2018You\u2019d owe it to the world.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n Meg clinked her coffee cup against Alex\u2019s. \u2018Absolutely! It\u2019s not plagiarism if they don\u2019t exist.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jade dropped her croissant. \u2018What? I could never do that! It\u2019s cheating!\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n But Alex and Meg were looking at their phones, faces knotted in concentration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Funny,\u2019 said Alex, still scrolling. \u2018I can\u2019t find any film called Yesterday<\/em>. You sure that\u2019s the title?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jade rolled her eyes. \u2018Ha, ha.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n Meg nodded. \u2018He\u2019s right. Look.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jade reached for her phone and typed into Google.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Film Yesterday.\u2019 Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Jack Malik Beatles.\u2019 Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something fizzed through Jade\u2019s veins. Excitement? Fear? She wasn\u2019t sure, but she couldn\u2019t just sit here. She ran outside, leaving the front door swinging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n James and Laura, her neighbours, were strolling past with their baby in a sling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Have you seen Yesterday?\u2019 <\/em>Jade blurted, breathless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Laura frowned, her hand hovering protectively over the baby\u2019s head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018What?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Yesterday.<\/em> The film about The Beatles?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n They shook their heads, looking at her as if she was quite mad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No-one in the Co-op had heard of it. No-one she messaged. No-one who replied to her frantic Facebook post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jade sprinted home. Alex and Meg were loitering outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They tilted their heads. \u2018Are you ok?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018I should go to bed,\u2019 she said, her voice rising hysterically.
