\u2018And if you\u2019re not\u2026?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018You\u2019re looking at a package to help you return from whence you came. A tidy sum.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
\u2018But\u2026 the nurses and doctors from abroad? A third, I read it somewhere, of all our medical workers\u2026 Who\u2019s going to replace them?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three ladies down this road have carers, all from Africa. Marvellous they are.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018They\u2019re taking jobs from people born here.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Born what? Have you seen some of them round here? Taking drugs, getting benefits. You\u2019re going to train them up as surgeons? That tubby Tracy Perkins next door, never worked a day in her life. Have her dress my leg? I wouldn\u2019t let her touch my dog.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018So: would you consider voting for us?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Well I mean\u2026 my husband wasn\u2019t born in Wales.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018One of our colonies, was it?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018It may have been a colony once, yes. I mean what hasn\u2019t been?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018One of our non-white former colonies?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Sid\u2019s white. There\u2019s smugglers in his family, going back. But Sid, yes, he\u2019s palish.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Pale? That could be a mitigating factor.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018I mean my first husband, Charlie, was dark. He were a succulent peach of a man. Died young. That\u2019s why the heath service matters to me. But Sid he\u2019s a crab apple, rotten to the core. Got meanness tattooed on his heart, he has. He\u2019s from Cornwall.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018We in Wales will have a reciprocal arrangement with our neighbours across the border. Rest assured, nobody\u2019ll be coming for Sid.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018That\u2019s a shame. I wouldn\u2019t mind if he went, actually. Now my children, they are mixed race.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018<\/em>Mixed\u2026?\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Born here, mind.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Ah.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Charlie was West Indian, see. Terrible wasn\u2019t it, that scandal.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018What scandal?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Windrush. All them West Indians living here for decades, paying taxes and insurance, then having to prove who they were, and next thing they\u2019re being sent back to a country they don\u2019t know.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Your vote, missus\u2026?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018You\u2019d\u2019ve sent Charlie home, wouldn\u2019t you? You\u2019ll want to \u201creturn\u201d my kids too, no doubt.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018I\u2019ll put you down as undecided, shall I?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Resettling? You can take Sid if you want. He\u2019s yours. But you\u2019re not getting my kids. Nor my vote.
