\u201cHey,\u201d the man inquired \u201care you a Jew?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGuilty as charged,\u201d Rossen smiled faintly and returned to his newspaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou ashamed of it?\u201d the man asked<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDidn\u2019t have much choice,\u201d Rossen shrugged and wondered if he should leap out at the next stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYa look Jewish,\u201d the man sniffed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow depressing,\u201d Rossen joked \u201cyou make it sound like the Innsmouth look.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

It had been a stressful day at work, and David Rossen, taking his thirty-minute bus shuffle back to his flat ready to choose between a MacDonald\u2019s or a microwave dinner found he couldn\u2019t sit exhausted in peace, for this stranger sitting across the aisle had introduced himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bald, with crater-like skin, a flatten nose and a big protruding belly on his thin frame, this guy could play an ogre in a fantasy movie, all you had to do was paint his skin green.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou killed Jesus!\u201d the man spat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGosh,\u201d Rossen yawned \u201cdid I? That happened, oh goodness two thousand years ago, which is an accomplishment given that I hadn\u2019t been born then.\u201d

\u201cWhat I meant was your lot killed Jesus!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rossen had actually read the New Testament from cover to cover and recalled the passage where, upon the cross the Son of God called out \u201cFather please forgive them for they know not what they do.\u201d And hadn\u2019t the Romans help snuff out J.C.? But nobody gave the present-day Italians grief for that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yet this man looked familiar. Not that Rossen would dare frequent the places this guy hung out, but hadn\u2019t he seen him before. Possibly TV? And all at once the mental archivist in Rossen\u2019s brain dug out the proper titbit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYour family were on the news, weren\u2019t they?\u201d Rossen recalled, \u201cYour grandad was a schoolmaster, abused plenty of kids. Only outed recently, right?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man squirmed uncomfortably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLast Wednesday,\u201d Rossen went on \u201caround 6:15, BBC News, Gerald Monks, abused thirteen schoolgirls, you were on TV, defending him, weren\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat they were saying about him was utter slander, completely untrue!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou really should register as a sex offender,\u201d Rossen laughed \u201csins of the fathers and all that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou wot? He died before I was born!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man\u2019s knuckles tightened, looking almost ready to get physical. But mercifully the bus came to a stop and Rossen without missing a beat, leapt from his seat and onto the pavement in a few seconds. The troll man didn\u2019t attempt to follow him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh look, right in front of him was a KFC, which was probably as good as he was going to get this night.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
