\u2026\u201dThe health of our nation is dependent on the wealth of our nation.  The poorest of our society has had to endure great hardships \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kathleen gives the remote control button a vicious prod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOi, I was watching that!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She turns and gives her husband a look of disbelief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe last thing we need right now is some stuck up government speaker telling us what we can\u2019t afford, I already know that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Her legs crumple beneath her as she falls onto the settee and starts to sob.  Ray brings her into his arms and hugs her tight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCome on love, I know its been hard but we\u2019ll get through this together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m scared Ray, really scared, I don\u2019t know how much longer we can go on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her sobbing starts to subside a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cChin up love, we\u2019re fighters remember. How about I make us a nice cup of tea?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no milk left, and no money to buy any,\u201d she managed to say before bursting into tears once more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPerhaps that nice couple next door will lend us a cupful?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDon\u2019t you dare do that, I\u2019m not letting the neighbours know how broke we are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cKath, its nothing to be ashamed of, it\u2019s not unusual for many people around these parts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI still don\u2019t like asking though.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJust let me go and ask them, you\u2019ll feel better after a cup of tea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll never be able to give them something in return.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRemember when they moved in, you helped them out then, it will be their chance to return the favour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, okay then, if you think it will be alright.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI won\u2019t be long, you get the water boiling.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ray comes back with two pints of milk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey were expecting visitors who had to cancel at the last minute, so they had loads to spare.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s very kind of them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not all Kath, you need to get your glad rags on and a bit of lippy.  They have cooked loads of food ready for their guests. They\u2019ll never eat it all so they\u2019ve invited us over to help them out. I said we\u2019d be over at seven, so we still have got time for that cuppa.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A beam lights up Kathleen\u2019s face.  Ray realises that he hasn\u2019t seen her smile for such a long time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cThat\u2019s so thoughtful of them, I\u2019ll pick some flowers from the garden to take with us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kathleen runs up the stairs to get ready, thinking how good it feels having such a nice husband and good neighbours.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
