Adam Taylor bounced out of the office, a ruggedly handsome man. His life revolved around getting that sensational story that would guarantee his fame and fortune. Life had other plans, he would become famous just not in the way imagined.
Adam had been working on something secretly for months. He was getting close and the lady Audrey, his snout, promised it was the real deal, she had inside information. Walking to the quiet gardens in Kensington he smiled to himself. At last it was going to happen. He was writing the story in his head.
Audrey was sitting reading her paper, as was her habit on dry days. Next to her was a flask of herbal tea and some seeds. She was an elderly lady with her hair tucked into a large hat, of military bearing, erect shoulders and back, tweed suit and sensible shoes. Seeing Adam approach, she tucked her paper away.
Using his natural charm, something he prided himself on, he strode up and placed himself next to her, his hand extended
”I’m pleased to meet you, Audrey. Is there a last name ?”
”Young man my name is none of your concern. It’s information you want, so just sit quiet, indulge an old woman and all will be revealed.”
He settled himself, wondering if this was a goose chase and she was a delusional old bird.
”You have been ruffling feathers in high places, young man; a secret government department that uses assassins, I think you say? ” Audrey stared at him from behind her thick spectacles. ”My story begins with an early life spent in boarding schools as Daddy travelled a lot. And don’t interrupt me. Here, have some tea, it’s a fruit tea, sweet and strong.
“During the war I was sent to France to help the resistance, as I had talents in languages, and shooting – both guns and bows. I made quite a name for myself, always one step ahead of the Gestapo, and I met the love of my life, Phillip. They got him in the end; it broke my heart. But I digress. After the war there was a need for spies in Europe. I had no ties, so it was perfect for me. I spent many years happily travelling the world.”
Adam, sipping his tea, said, ” You’re telling me you killed people? ”
”Oh yes, many, both during and after the war; all in the government’s name. Well not really, politicians can be such wimps on a need to know basis.”
Feeling lightheaded, Adam leaned back on the bench. Audrey watching intently as a sad smile crossed her face .
”You see Adam, I have a gift for taking out people that poke their noses into things that are none of their business. Your tea was laced with narcotics and you will just pass away peacefully. I will find you, and when the police turn up who will suspect a little old lady? So goodbye young man.”
